Abstract Evolution in Acrylic and Collage with Jodi Ohl

  • Have you been dabbling in Abstract Painting in Acrylic but struggle a bit in how to create compositions that are intriguing?
  • Perhaps you are feeling stuck and want to loosen up your work.
  • Are you searching for techniques to add depth and style to improve your creative processes?
  • Maybe you are looking to connect with other like-minded artists and share tips to motivate and inspire one another.

If you can relate to one or more of these questions, you are not alone!

Just as you evolve over the course of your life, our abstract paintings also go on a journey of evolution. As you might already know, the pathway of moving forward can get tricky and uncomfortable, yet exhilarating and exciting at other times.  As an artist with over 15 years of teaching experience to thousands of artists around the world and author of “Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink”, Jodi Ohl will help you gain confidence in your abstract painting through some tried and true exercises and processes that will help you go from background to an expressive composition.

If you are looking to dig deeper to find your style and level up your work, this workshop will gently guide you through the murky stages and cheer you on during times of exciting discoveries.  Over the course of this 5-day workshop, students will learn to practice their craft through exercises designed to stretch their wings and bloom through collage and pattern design as well as painting a series of related pieces over the duration of the workshop.

We will be working on both paper and canvas.  While we will primarily use acrylic paint along with mixed media supplies. students will also explore working with a variety of drawing instruments, assorted mark making tools, and mediums to expand our paint texture and viscosity.  By working on various surfaces and multiple pieces during the class, you will find yourself opening up to extraordinary possibilities and letting go of your previous inhibitions.

Students will have ample time for painting and exploration on their own as well as working through guided demonstrations, discussions, feedback and critiques as well warm up projects to help breakthrough blocks every artist faces.

Topics that will be covered in “Abstract Evolution” will include but not limited to:

  • Pattern and collage making exploration
  • Sketching with Paint
  • Letting Go of Expectations and Not Taking Yourself So Seriously
  • Creating Drama in Your Painting
  • Expanding a Limited Palette and Color Mixing Strategies
  • Building a Body of Work that is Related

Students can expect to work on several warmup paintings/painted sketches that may or may not reflect a finished piece in addition to 2-3 larger projects during the week.

Who is this class for? All levels of painters are welcome, but students should have a working knowledge of acrylic paint and a desire to let go and explore abstract painting.  This course will be flexible enough for beginners to dive in and start developing their skills and challenging enough for the more experienced painter to deepen and enhance their practice of abstract painting.

We hope to see you in this immersive experience during ‘Abstract Evolution”!
