Description

Workshop Brief: This workshop aims to develop conceptual and practical skills in sketching with ink and watercolor. Participants will be exposed to multiple ink medium pens and learn how to sketch and shade with them. Once participants grasp the basic ink sketching techniques, they will learn how to incorporate watercolor into their ink sketches. During the workshop, participants will also learn about perspectives, composition, color concepts and design.

Workshop Format: Workshop participants will work along Kar-Keat as he conducts his demonstrations during the workshop sessions. Participants are free to ask questions along the way.

General Workshop Schedule:
Day 1: Participants will learn basic pen and ink drawing and shading skills by sketching simple shapes and still-life arrangements. Through a series of exercises, they will learn about line quality, perspectives, tonal values and composition.

Day 2: Participants will be exposed to basic watercolor techniques and their application to pen and ink sketches. Through a series of exercises, they will learn about mastering tonal values with watercolor, composition and design.

Day 3: Participants will learn to transition the use of monotone to colors. Through a series of exercises, they will learn about color concepts, color mixing and using them effectively.

Day 4: Participants will learn how to sketch and paint natural elements, textures, building materials and objects. Through a series of exercises, they will learn value and color application, composition and design.

Learning Outcomes following Workshop Participation:
Participants will:

  • Gain knowledge in using ink medium in conjunction with watercolor
  • Develop confidence and understand the dynamics of sketching on location
  • Understand the basics of perspective construction, composition, color concepts and design, and be able to embark on their own artistic expression through sketching
  • Acquire skills and passion for effective life-long learning

Biography

Kar-Keat Chong, NWS, is a Minneapolis-based architect and watercolorist. Trained under local artists in his hometown of Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia when he was fourteen, Kar-Keat resumed his passion for watercolor painting in 2017 under the mentorship of world-renowned watercolor artist and father-in-law Cheng-Khee Chee. His work has been accepted into national and international juried exhibitions such as National Watercolor Society and Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Besides running his own art and architecture studio, Kar-Keat is an adjunct instructor at the University of Minnesota’s College of Design – School of Architecture teaching a course in watercolor. He has also conducted sketching workshops at University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and most recently at Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, Minnesota. As a former chapter administrator of the Urban Sketchers Twin Cities, Kar-Keat has been involved with Urban Sketchers activities since 2017. He has helped to plan and lead sketchwalks in Minneapolis and in Winona, Minnesota. Kar-Keat has attended international symposiums in Porto, Amsterdam and most recently Sketch Racine and Asialink Sketch Walk in his hometown of Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

Kar-Keat primarily sketches and paints on location, striving to capture the atmospheric quality of a place at a particular moment. As a visual story teller, Kar-Keat hopes to share glimpses of other cultures around the world through his art.

Dine-Around Dinners: Registration required at the front desk, meet at 5:00pm in the main lobby for carpooling.

Day students are welcome to attend the Welcome Reception and Farewell Reception (included in your package). You are also invited to join the class dinners (additional fee). PAL’s (Participants at large) can vacation at Dillman’s for $40 per night for accommodations. Costs for box lunches and dinners are additional.
