Contemporary Abstracts in Acrylic
Sep 8 - Sep 13
4 Teaching Days
Description
Contemporary Abstract Painting Using Acrylics
If you are an artist who wants to dig deeper into abstract painting or one that wants to explore something new and exciting, “Contemporary Abstract Painting using Acrylics “will guide you along in that journey of discovery. Over the course of this 4-day workshop, students will learn to practice their craft through exercises designed to stretch their wings. We will be working on both paper and canvas, but students can bring wood surfaces as well if they prefer a sturdier substrate. While we will primarily use acrylic paint, students will also explore working with charcoal, a variety of drawing instruments, assorted mark making tools, and mediums to expand our paint texture and viscosity.
If you have trouble moving passed the background stage of an abstract painting or would like to enhance your overall strength in the area of composition, this workshop will gently guide you towards these goals under the guidance of artist, Jodi Ohl, who is also the author of “Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink”.
Students will have plenty of time for painting and exploration as the studio will be open 24/7 for their use. During the day, we will incorporate demonstrations, discussions, feedback and critiques as well guided projects and exercises daily.
Topics that will be covered in “Contemporary Abstract Painting” will include but not limited to:
- Sketching with Paint
- Letting go of Expectations and Not Taking Yourself So Seriously
- Creating Drama in Your Painting
- Expanding a Limited Palette
- Transforming Your Paint Using Mediums
- Working in a Series
Students can expect to work on several warm up paintings/painted sketches that may or may not reflect a finished piece but will serve as inspiration for our main project which is to plan and begin the creation of a new series of Contemporary Abstract Paintings.
Who is this class for? All levels of painters are welcome, but students should have a working knowledge of acrylic paint and a desire to let go and explore abstract painting. This course will be flexible enough for beginners to dive in and start developing their skills and challenging enough for the more experienced painter to deepen and enhance their practice of abstract painting.
We hope to see you in this fun-filled and adventurous Contemporary Abstract Workshop!
