Phil Austin Memorial Watercolor Workshop Award

In honor of our founding instructor, Phil Austin, the Dillman's Creative Arts Scholarship Committee has created one $300 award to be applied toward Dillman's workshop fees.

Phil constantly exemplified the best possible attitude of sharing. Phil shared his special gifts and knowledge with his students and showed the patience every great instructor exhibits. We were privileged to have known Phil during the 20 years he taught in northern Wisconsin with Dillman's Creative Arts Foundation plus on trips to exotic ports of call such as, two trips to Bermuda, Cruises in the Deep and Western Caribbean plus Florida. Phil was still painting watercolors at the age of 94, when he passed away in April 2004.

The Phil Austin Memorial Award will be awarded and selected by the Dillman's Creative Arts Foundation Scholarship Committee from those applications.

Applicants may use the same scholarship application, This applicant must show financial need (as compared to the honorariums which do not specify financial need).

On your applications, please note you are applying for the "Phil Austin Award."

The criteria the scholarship committee will be using for their decision process is:

  1. Student paints in the same media as Phil, watercolor
  2. Certain classes are eligable for this grant, therefore, note a second and third choice for consideration
  3. Award is based upon availability

Thank you to all the instructors who have offered these options and also the patrons of the arts who have made donations for this purpose. Annually over $3,000 worth of scholarships are awarded.

2024 Wyldfire Foundation Sanctuary Scholarship

Amount: $600 Applicable for class tuition and/or room and board stipend

Rachel Monaco discovered Dillman’s because of a Christmas gift in 2019 from her beloved husband Corey Wilcox. Corey’s abrupt death at age 45 in 2022 from pancreatic cancer changed Rachel’s life irrevocably. She found solace in her art practice and taking time for retreat, peace, being in nature and interacting with kind and supportive new people.

In 2023, Rachel established this scholarship in honor of Corey’s and her foundation, the Wyldfire Foundation, whose mission serves conservation, creativity and art therapy, animal welfare (especially for canines from sporting and working breeds), education, and justice. It also captures the spirit of boldness and courage in lighting a spark for good, that under the right conditions, can spread quickly and powerfully throughout communities and lives.

The Sanctuary Scholarship is intended for a person in a time of transition, providing an opportunity to gain perspective, peace, healing, inspiration and rest in the embracing community and natural beauty of Dillman’s Resort and workshops. Financial need, artistic expertise/prior instruction or awards may be considered but are not a barrier- please note this when completing the online application and state you are applying for the Sanctuary Scholarship.

All applications are confidential to the Dillman’s and Wyldfire Foundation’s reviewing committee and will compassionately respect and honor applicant’s reasons for applying.
