Louise Laakso Lundin

Drawing and Painting Heads, Faces and Features

Sept 15-20, 2019 (Four Teaching Days)

Louise’s watercolor workshop falls into the portrait painting category with an emphasis of capturing the essence of a child (little boy or girl or both) and woman and man (younger and older) in watercolor, sometimes in ink and watercolor. Louise and students will work from photos, clippings, and life as they draw and paint people, the head and its architecture: the face and its features; hands; hair; drapery.

Each morning, Louise will use watercolor (sometimes pencil and ink) to demonstrate and explain the what, why, and how of drawing and painting people — the lesson of the day, followed by painting time for students. Students will receive individual attention (all questions answered) as they paint the daily subject. At the end of class, students will be encouraged to participate in a short, gentle, and helpful critique, and Q & A. This workshop is designed for painters of all levels who want to draw and paint people, or explore another approach (including digital media) to painting heads, faces, and features — and re-charge their creative batteries.

“Robert Henri once said 'I would rather see a wonderful little child than the Grand Canyon.' That said... I would rather draw and paint a wonderful little child’s head, face, and features than the Grand Canyon — as much as I like landscape painting. I welcome painters of all levels to join me in this workshop for four fun people-painting days. - Louise

Louise Laakso Lundin is a life-long artist who works primarily in watercolor and is best known for drawing and painting people. Her approach to drawing and painting people is unique. She likes keeping it simple, relying on shapes, values, and color-value, aiming to capture the essence of her subject. Louise is a gentle instructor who encourages her students to try, to be true to themselves, and to not be afraid of failure. She often quotes Ed Whitney, who said, “Don’t be afraid to fail [to make mistakes] because that is how you learn.” Louise studied watercolor and design under Edgar Whitney, Frank Webb, Cheng-Khee Chee, Stephen Quiller, and others. She graduated summa cum laude from University of Minnesota-Duluth, and has continued advance study of art and design. She teaches watercolor workshops and small-group (semiprivate) classes for organizations and in her studio. She has worked as a courtroom artist, has done cover art for publications including Al Zdon’s books titled War Stories I, II, and III, respectively. Louise’s people paintings, her birch watercolor paintings, and her Sauna Paintings embellish the walls of homes and businesses in the United States and Finland.
