Sarah E. Rehmer

Below the Surface: Photo + Encaustic

June 3-8, 2018 (Four Teaching Days)

This workshop will focus on combining photography with encaustic painting techniques as a way to present your photographically based works in a more tactical way. This workshop will cover the basics of working in the medium, as well as exploring different paper printing options for our photographic images. From there we will take our photographic prints and embed them in the encaustic wax medium, which will allow us to over paint them, apply image transfers, color glazes and hand coloring techniques. You do not need prior experience working with encaustic paint, but general art making experience and understanding of digital photography work-flow will be helpful. Instructor will supply paint and medium plus all equipment and brushes needed for use during the workshop, as well as all printing equipment and paper.

Sarah Rehmer was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, where she still resides. In 2003 Rehmer earned her BA in Graphic Design and Photography from Dominican University in River Forest, IL. She found her love for working with pages from old books and encaustic while auditing a class post-graduation at the university. Rehmer is a FY2012 Illinois Arts Council - Professional Development Grant recipient and her work is held in private collections both around the United States and internationally, as well as Institutional and Corporate collections in Illinois and New York.
