Margaret (Peggy) Carter Baumgaertner

Painting the Plein Air Portrait

Sept 4-9, 2016 (Four Teaching Days)

Bring Plein Air Glow and Vibrancy to Your Portraits!

Margaret (Peggy) Carter Baumgaertner simplifies the challenge of painting portraits en Plein air. Using the Cape Cod School of Art method, Baumgaertner explains step-by-step how to achieve the subtle value, yet intense rich color of the colorist portrait.

The first two sessions of class are devoted to understanding color theory and application. During the final six sessions, the artist will be working from a live model. The workshop addresses light and shadow, value, planes of the head, local color, secondary color, tertiary color and reflected color, penumbra and atmosphere. Also included is a Block Study to train the eye to see color, temperature, and value variations. Baumgaertner also speaks to the history of Plein air painting, materials and setup, and the colorist palette.

The entire four days is devoted to seeing color, learning how to manipulate the paint, painting directly (alla prima), and feeling in control, enervated, and competent!
