Abstract Painting: Working in Multiples

Sept 13-18, 2015 (Four Teaching Days)

When we say “abstract painting”, we usually mean a painting that is not in the business of representing an object outside itself. It can evoke mood or suggest specific reference, but it can also be about visual language itself. We will use acrylic paints and drawing materials to explore color, shape, line, edge, scale, pattern, texture, and many more aspects of abstract visual language. Learn how to use harmonies and contrasts of elements to bring your pieces to a new level of expression. Make peace with your Inner Critic as you develop a healthy art practice, with an emphasis on process. Approach each project as a series, so you can let go of the preciousness of individual outcomes, try out different solutions to visual "problems", and give your work the momentum and focus it takes to express your individual creative voice.

Jane Davies is a full time artist working in collage and painting. She offers workshops nationwide, focusing on helping people to find a personal and playful approach to art making. Beginning as a potter in the early nineties, Davies gradually transitioned into freelance art, using painting and collage as her medium. For the past five years she has put most of her efforts towards teaching, writing, and making art. She is the author of three books on collage and mixed media, one on ceramics, and has one DVD on painting and collage techniques.
