Alla Prima Figures in Watercolor

William Rogers ArtworkJoin Bill in painting the watercolor figure from life in 'one go'. Bill's year long routine of painting from life twice weekly gives him lots of experience to pass along. His award winning figure paintings have color that is mixed on the paper without overwork- all skills he will teach you. Various approaches to design and paint application will be demonstrated, followed by students working on their own from the live model - and lots of individual help from Bill. Corrective solutions using gouache, acrylic, and pastel will provide the student with even more tools to improve their figure paintings.

William (Bill) Rogers is an Elected Member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) and is currently the 1st Vice President. He is also a signature member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA) and the Societe Canadienne de l'Aquarelle (SCA). Most of his landscapes are done "Plein-air" and he also paints the model from life, usually twice a week. One of these watercolor figures is featured in "Splash 9" from Northlight Books.

He also has a figure drawing in "Strokes of Genius 2" from Northlight Books. Horses are a subject dear to his heart, as he had owned them for over 20 years. These days he just paints them but his intimate knowledge of their anatomy and characteristic actions helps make his horse subjects much sought after and winners of numerous awards. Bill has extensive teaching experience and teaches Art part time at StFX University as well as many workshops in Canada and abroad.

Testimonials from some of Bill's students

  • "Bill is one of the top art instructors I've had. He's very nuts-and-bolts. No BS. He's respectful of the students, the subject matter and the resulting art. The student learns a lot. I was touched that he cared enough about me getting my brushstrokes right that he actually held the brush in my hand to show me how to form an edge and use the belly of the brush to get rich colour and texture. Demos are always interesting but, he's constantly teaching as he paints. During a one-hour demo I took five pages of illustrated notes, during another- seven pages. His prepared notes are helpful long after the workshops and his availability to the student after the fact is invaluable."

  • "As past Workshop Coordinator for both Evangeline Artists' Cooperative Wolfville NS and Bedford Basin Artists Society HRM Nova Scotia, I would like to inform you that Bill Rogers is one of the most informative and sharing teaching artists that I have had the privilege to paint. Bill ensures the entire class is productive while giving expert advice and demonstrations. He has a Hands-on approach, which benefits both the novice as well as the experienced artists. Bill has great knowledge of artists' products and recommends his personal trialed products. Critiquing at end of session is presented providing maximum advantage for improvement to the student. Bill's friendly, easy-going nature is refreshing and a must for promoting positive teaching. I would recommend Bill Rogers for your special workshops; he does not disappoint!"

  • "Bill Rogers brings considerable talent and a wealth of teaching experience to deliver his succinct but salient points to his students. Beginners to accomplished artists can expect astute critical comments and enthusiastic encouragement in assessment of their efforts."
    Peter Marsh CSPWC, Toronto
  • "I enjoyed the two classes of Plein Air Painting that I took with William Rogers. My watercolours are usually created in my studio. One painting will take me at least one month. So I initially felt like a fish out of water doing a painting in a few hours on location. But William is brilliant at demonstrating different approaches to painting on location. He was very encouraging and helped me have success."
    Josy Britton, SCA, CSPWC
  • "Bill, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your workshop. Your demonstrations are so detailed and the step-by-step instruction was exactly what I needed. You made my first ever plein air painting fun and painless. Thank you for starting me on a new painting adventure."
    Karin Isenburg CSPWC, Toronto
