Pictorial Quilting–Painting with Fabric
New to Dillman’s
www.wendybutlerberns.com
Explore the process of creating simple picture quilts from a photograph- essentially painting with the medium of fabric. We will start the week using Wendy's Poppy Pizzazz pattern to cover her how-to "picture image appliqué" steps that include freezer paper, glue stick and invisible free motion machine appliqué. You will explore your own designs and gain the confidence to use your own cherished photo as inspiration in an original impressionistic piece. Wendy will include tips and techniques she loves relating to use of color, value, fabric selection, portraying the figurative form, specialty threads and machine embellishing. Come join the adventure of exploring pictorial quilts!
No formal drawing experience is needed as you explore this process of creating a very personal and unique picture quilt using the line drawings from your photograph. Students bring their own sewing machines and must be comfortable with its operation.
Wendy is a published, award winning quilt artist who found her passion for quilting in 1993. Since 1997, she has taught and lectured about the art of quilting at conferences, guilds and retreats across the country. Her work appears regularly in juried shows and galleries as well as in private collections nationally and internationally. Wendy's original art quilts are noted for their bold use of color, unusual fabrics and a combination of unconventional techniques. "Wendy's creative passion and energetic teaching style encourages and inspires students and keeps them coming back for more."
Wendy’s quilting is a passion that blossomed into a creative obsession. Each new project is an adventure and an opportunity to try different techniques. Wendy’s quilts tell stories of people, places, and journeys that have shaped her life. Her work has appeared in regional and national juried shows including the International Quilt Festival, Houston, TX, The American Quilter’s Society’s show in Paducah, KY, the Mid Atlantic Quilt Fest in Hampton, Virginia and the Pacific International Quilt Fest, Santa Rosa, CA just to name a few. She regularly participates in group exhibitions and has been honored to have numerous solos shows as well.
Wendy's book, Photo Album Quilts published by Lark Books Sterling Publishers has been popular, but is now out of print. She has also authored numerous articles in quilt publications such as Quilting Arts, Quilters Newsletter, National Quilt Association Quarterly, Fons and Porter.
Wendy’s skill as an effective and successful teacher has her traveling regularly to teach. In 2009, Wendy was awarded the Jewel Pearce Patterson Scholarship for quilting teachers awarded annually by International Quilt Market. In October, 2009, she spent 10 days at the International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston as a student taking classes. During the next year, she was responsible for curating an exhibit of 12 quilts - 3 of her own and 9 of her students that reflect inspirations she had during her studies as a student. The exhibition theme is "Out on a Limb." It has been touring throughout 2010-11. Wendy’s workshops are as eclectic as her work. She loves teaching tradition with a twist, art quilts, design elements, color, machine thread embellishing, machine appliqué and machine quilting. She generously shares her knowledge and creates a safe environment for her students to be successful whatever their level is.

“The Soul’s Reflections in Fiber”
Art Quilts by Wendy Butler Berns “I love fabric. I love color. I love to stitch. Quilting is an art form that allows me to combine these passions. My quilts tell stories of people, places and journeys that are important to me. The visions, feelings and messages for these stories energetically dart about inside me. By creating with fabric and thread, quilt making offers me the spontaneous freedom to express and direct this internal energy and vision into original, tangible and textural images I can share with others.”
