Log Cabin Revisited–Moving from Traditional to Contemporary Quilting
Returning for the 2nd year in 2012
This class is second in a series of exploring design possibilities from old patterns. Traditionally "Log Cabin" is a pattern based on a center square with straight, uniform strips of fabric going around the center. In exploring and updating this pattern, students will discover the center does not need to be square or in the middle of the block and strips do not need to be uniform or one piece of fabric. Rene will teach how to create multiple color and patterned strips utilizing triangles, curved piecing, checkerboard, and three-dimensional folds.
Sunday evening Rene will discuss her transition from traditional to contemporary including “How does she come up with these ideas.” A trunk show of her transition will inspire others on moving from standard patterns and fabrics to uniquely individualized pieces. Following the trunk show students are encouraged to prepare their sewing areas for two full days of creating.
Monday and Tuesday from 8:30-4:00 participants will be making creative and unique fabric strips, and assembling a small piece. Rene will be available on Monday and Tuesday evenings for questions and additional assistance prior to check out for those wishing to continue sewing. The art quilt created will be one of a kind and the student will leave feeling confident that cutting up simple pieced blocks can be applied to not only this piece by other old patterns.
Rene Iannarelli, newly retired, Rene has time to apply techniques in color theory, design processes, embellishments, surface design, sun printing, hand dyeing, felting ,fine piecing, and painting on fabric she has learned over the last thirty years of quilting. Putting aside the world of health care after 30 years, she dreams of fabric creations and envisions how a technique learned years ago can be applied to her design.
Rene has taken classes from national and international quilting experts including Karen Combs, Carol Taylor, Bonnie Browning, Margaret Miller, Joen Wolfrum, Wendy Bulter Berns, Liz Porter, and Doreen Speckman the last 10 years. Additionally, she has taught classes on Sunshine and Shadow, Lone Star, Attic Windows, Striped Drunkard’s Patch, Three Dimensional Bow Tie and Nine Patch Revisited. She has also offered presentations to the various quilts guilds she has been a member of over the years.
