Watercolor: Simple, Fast & Focused
Returning for the 2nd year in 2012

The art of watercolor provides a means of expression that no other medium has. Because of its unique, spontaneous, and transparent qualities, watercolor painting is always exciting, unpredictable, and challenging. Mel's workshops are casual and friendly and are spirited with an easy, open dialogue. Emphasis will be placed on "The Big Three"– simplify, think & paint quickly, and focus. Class will take place outdoors, on location, and will consist of painting landscapes and people in landscapes. Mel paints in a loose, representational style. Design principles, composition, and color/value relationships will be discussed throughout.
This workshop will reflect the title of Mel’s very popular book, Watercolor: Simple, Fast, and Focused. The workshop is designed for beginners to advanced students. Each class begins with a complete demonstration by Mel with a step-by-step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject. The demo takes about an hour and students are welcome to ask Mel questions as he is painting. After the demo students begin painting. If an individual has a personal way of working, he or she will be encouraged in that direction. A relaxing break for lunch and then students will continue to paint after lunch. Personal attention and one-on-one instruction will be given while you paint. A class critique is given at day’s end of the paintings done during the day. The critique is an important phase of your painting experience because we learn from each other. Mel’s enthusiasm for painting watercolors, his relaxed manner, and his sense of humor adds to the enjoyment of his workshops.

Artist’s Statement:
“I feel privileged to be an artist. Art is, was and will always be a great force in human existence. It is a reflection, after all, of ourselves and how we see life. Regardless of what school of art one identifies with, the artist never graduates. Acquiring knowledge is a joy forever. The reward for the life-long effort of artists is not in material things. It is simply contentment.”
