Design and composition: that evasive element that elevates a painting from ordinary to award-winning is the main focus of Kathleen's class. Whether you are a representational painter or totally abstract, a beginner or advanced, strengthening your design and compositional skills will help you create your best, dynamic artwork. The focus of the workshop is design, composition and experimentation. The first step in making "chaos" includes texturing techniques, layering methods, lots of color and an experimental attitude to jump-start dynamic, energetic and expressive paintings. Kathleen teaches specific lessons and shares her tricks for applying the concepts of design elements and principles, color theories, layering, finishing and editing techniques to bring the chaos to "order."
Individual attention and independent work time will aid understanding and application of new information. Also, learn to be your own critic: See your work with “new eyes”, identify problems and manipulate the design tools for successful finishing of your paintings.
Kathleen is known for her generous sharing of her knowledge of materials, methods of working and experience in the business of being an artist. Bring your sense of adventure and enthusiasm for this high-energy, fully-packed workshop.
Painting became a focus of Kathleen Conover's life when at a very young age she received her first set of paints and won her first award in a regional school competition. Growing up in southern California she was exposed to an art-rich environment and surrounded by working artists, nationally acclaimed instructors and a strong "California School of Art" style of contemporary painting.
Kathleen studied undergraduate fine arts at San Diego State University and the University of Washington. She earned her Master of Arts degree at Northern Michigan University.
As a Master Artist, Kathleen is frequently asked to jury exhibitions and teach workshops across the country. Her travels around the world continue to enrich and inspire her work. She paints with openness and honesty to her subject matter guided by intense observation and deep personal reflection. Her unique designs are rich in symbolic expression, and observed with "multiple layers" both literally and figuratively. Living over 30 years on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan's upper peninsula, she is continually inspired by an intimate relationship with a dramatic nature: it's severity and beauty, it's abstract forms and concepts and it's natural complexities.
