Ojibwe Culture: Moccasins, Beaded Bags & Mittens

Greg JohnsonStudy with master artist Greg Johnson as you learn the traditional process of tanning/preparing the deer hide, how to create the pattern, and construction of the split toe moccasin. You will then transition into working with the patterns of beadwork. Greg will teach you the technique of beaded applique on velvet. You will learn how to sew and create the ultimate end product—a one of a kind pair of old style Ojibwe moccasins.

Greg Johnson is a master artist and teacher working in beadwork, birchbark canoes, wigwams, moccasins, and regalia. He is the recipient of the 2009 Wisconsin Arts Board Folk Arts Apprenticeship award and has passed on the traditional art of Ojibwe beading and moccasin making to an apprentice in Lac du Flambeau and has also taught many Native and non-Native learners the traditional arts. Greg is involved in the Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe language program, was the editor of the Lac du Flambeau newspaper, and is a graphic designer and website designer.

Artist Statement
As an instructor of Native Arts it was my mission to share my knowledge without being condescending. It was difficult for me to learn these things as I had to teach myself by exploring the pieces in the museum. I wanted to make the knowledge more accessible for my students. I was one of those ‘starving artists’ once and I learned how to provide for my people using my talents. I have been called upon dozens of times to speak to people from other countries and also to communities outside of Lac du Flambeau to educate them about our way of life. I am a Lac du Flambeau native and this in my environment. I care about the community and its people.

My experience begins with my traditional lifestyle. I balance traditional values with modern technical expertise; walking the fine line between the world of my ancestors and the world we live in today. I am a strong leader, but I believe our diversity is our strength. Together we are stronger; we represent many roads and we have the opportunity to learn from each other. This gallery gives us the chance to be more than a collection of individuals. Our common goal will be to create a sustainable way of life in order to support our local artists and their families.
