Brenda Mattson     June 10–16, 2012 (Five Teaching Days)
Paint Sunsets & Water–Realistic Pastel & Oil

Brenda MattsonLearn the skills needed to create the subtlety and nuance of color, perspective and form in realist pastel and oil paintings. Brenda will help you hone your skills in observing the world which is required for a diverse range of conceptual and technical tools. The development of these skills is the focus of this class and includes the creation of the illusion of depth; proportion; control of texture and smoothness to create a convincing painting. Brenda will demonstrate her underpainting process using some of the old masters techniques and work hands on with all students. Bring your own photographs or use some of Brenda's. The class atmosphere will have lively discussions and constructive critiques. All skill levels are welcome.

From the moment Brenda's Grandfather gave her a set of oil paints, at the age of eight, she has dreamed of becoming a great artist. She was able to keep the dream, even through the detours life can throw at you. The need to learn and improve was, and still is, strong enough to keep that desire burning. Brenda is noted for her extraordinary ability to excel at portraits, landscapes, florals and animals with a realism that many can only dream of. Brenda works in a variety of mediums from pencil, soft pastels, oil, encaustic and clay to name a few. She has embraced photography, which is especially useful in her travels. She is active in promoting art through the many organizations she belongs to and through teaching workshops across the U.S. and abroad. Brenda's students enjoy her "hands on" teaching approach. She wants each student to identify and develop their own style. She shares what she has learned about light, shadows, color, composition, foreground, background, detail and techniques to help nurture that style. Teaching allows Brenda to meet people and travel, two things she enjoys as much as painting.

Brenda Mattson is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a member of the Portrait Society of America, the Salmagundi Club NY, was Exhibition Chairperson for the International Association of Pastel Societies from 2006-2009 and is Historian for the Great Lakes Pastel Society. In 2009 she received the IAPS Golden Mentor Award and Master Circle Award. Her work has been published in three books and several art magazines. She has a portrait of President Ford in the permanent collection of the Gerald R. Ford Museum and two painting in the permanent collection of the President Reagan museum.
