Michael Ireland     Oct 2-8, 2011 (Five Teaching Days)
Awash with Color; Bigger than the Both of Us

Michael Ireland Artwork “I’ve come to realize that painting is a process. One more set of tools to master. One more discipline in which to learn to breathe.” With that said, welcome to the world of watercolor that goes far beyond the quarter or half sheet. Michael revels in going beyond the scope and scale of traditional watercolor. While still a purist at heart in most ways, his work challenges the notion of watercolor being constrained to a small sheet of paper. This class is as physically challenging as it is rewarding in seeing your work at a scale you have never experienced before. There will be a number of hands on painting lessons with 2-3 paintings being accomplished. Preparation for the painting process and alternative materials/substrates will also be explored. Intermediate level is suggested.

Michael has participated in the creative process for over twenty-five years as a watercolorist/painter, musician, muralist and art director for stage, print, multimedia and film.

He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he studied painting under the direction of master watercolorist and instructor, Irving Shapiro. Upon leaving school, Michael proceeded to live the proverbial artist’s life. In other words he was a painter, bartender, farmer, college staff member, poet and cook finally settling down as a graphic designer and art director in the early eighties.

Throughout this whole period, Michael found time to continue to explore the effects of light and color through the medium of watercolor. His lifelong passion is now his lifelong career. Today he is a widely respected artist specializing in large scale/format watercolors for the architectural, design and consultant trade nationwide.

Michael’s home and studio is in Cary, Illinois where he resides with his wife and children.
