Drawing: The Beginning
Returning for the 5th year in 2011 New to Dillman’s
Learning to draw is a process — a wonderful process of learning to see.
Linda's drawing workshop has a strong emphasis on process, incorporating many quick, non-threatening exercises designed to teach observation and eye-hand coordination. Students learn to recognize line, shape, value and negative space, and often comment that learning to draw has made their visual world much richer, full of overlooked details and subtleties. Actual objects provide the subject content for the lessons, with an emphasis on charcoal and pencil. Charcoal, the lesser known tool, will quickly become a favorite as it covers ground quickly, is very forgiving, is easily put down and easily removed. Linda’s classroom environment is warm and supportive, and includes demonstrations, individual instruction, slides, handouts and chocolate.
Linda and her husband Ron recently relocated from California to live near family in a small town in Kansas. Her new studio is in a turn of the century brick store front that has good bones, decades of neglect, and the potential for an upstairs loft.
Linda has an MFA from UC Santa Barbara, and taught for twelve years at Santa Barbara City College: 2-D Design Composition & Color, Beginning Drawing, and Artists' Books. Her paintings, artists' books, and installations have been selected for national & local juried exhibitions, and are held in private and university collections.
“Learning to draw has very little to do with “talent” and a great deal to do with an attitude of anticipation and discovery: becoming aware; learning to see; and developing an appreciation for the wide variety of marks that work together to form a compelling drawing. Never underestimate what is possible. We become skilled after many many hours at the drawing table. One key to perseverance is learning to find satisfaction in the process. I thoroughly enjoy teaching people to draw. As a student, you are my colleague, teacher and muse. I owe a great debt to those who have passed through my classroom door.”
Studio: Designed for the absolute beginner, but will benefit more experienced artists who want to revisit the basics.
