Landscape Painting with Pastel and Oil -
Plein Air
New to Dillman's in 2011
www.kevinbeck.com
This intensive workshop is designed for the participant who wants to learn the fundamentals of painting the landscape directly from nature. Kevin will help you to learn to “see” as an artist. Both studio and plein air demonstrations will help you to: simplify the process of working on location; learn to create interesting compositions, recognize and interpret values and paint attention grabbing works. Oil painters will learn the power of a limited pallet and pastel painters the versatility of the medium. Included in the demonstrations will be one aimed at improving your use of photography as a painting reference in the studio.
If there is inclement weather we will paint in the studio from photographic references or your field studies. In preparation for this, be sure and bring some photographs or field studies of your favorite landscape subjects. I will have an assortment of photographs available but suggest that you work from material that you are familiar with. You are welcome to bring examples of your work (regardless of medium) for an in depth review.
Kevin is one of the Southeast’s most collected artists. He is celebrated for his vibrant paintings that resonate with the soul of the landscape. He creates in both pastel and oil in plein air and the studio. Though he teaches only a limited number of workshops a year, he’s known for his articulate and generous instruction, as well as the humor and equanimity he brings to the classroom.
Kevin began his studies as a child at the Canton Art Institute in Canton, Ohio. A family friend who was both an architect and artist inspired him. Following somewhat in his footsteps, Kevin followed a business career, painting in his spare time and continuing to craft his style. Eventually the pull of full time painting was too much and he left his corporate career to pursue an artist’s life.
Kevin has been featured in Pastel Artist International, Our State Magazine, Lifestyles Magazine, the Spectator, High Country Home and numerous local, state and regional publications. His work can be found in the book, Painting North Carolina – Impressions en Plein Air. His work hangs in the Hayes Performing Arts Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Sun Trust and Wachovia Banks and countless professional facilities. Two of his Blue Ridge paintings were juried into the Arts in Embassies program of the U.S. government. His images have been used for posters, greeting cards, tee shirts, labels for consumer products, and as set decoration for the movie “28 Days” with Sandra Bullock. However, he is most proud of the artwork that hangs in homes of individuals and families all over the world.
