Vibrant Watercolors

Alvaro Castagnet Alvaro will be teaching the same class back-to-back in May at Dillman's.

A comprehensive workshop with analysis of “what makes a painting” from a technical, as well as, a philosophical perspective. You will study the subtleties of painting, including light and values. You’ll practice broad washes, color mixing, wet-on-wet, and wet-on-dry techniques, as well as lost and found edges. This is an opportunity to have fun learning from an energetic and colorful master of expressive watercolor. Alvaro portrays a strong, impressive and colorful style with superb interpretation of light effects, capturing the soul of the places he paints. Although best known for his portrayal of urban scenes Alvaro has come to know and love the surrounding of Dillman’s with its clarity of light, and relaxing scenes.

Learn the secrets of producing vibrant and powerful watercolors from internationally recognized watercolorist, Alvaro. You will search for light effects and depth, with shadows contrasting loose and tight brushstrokes to enhance the focal point and exploring color mixing, paying special attention to tonal values. Alvaro will give you useful tools and advise on how to handle watercolor to capture mood and atmosphere. This is a fun filled workshop for the adventurous artist willing to explore wider horizons. There will be plenty of demos and individual guidance in a fun and productive environment. The class will paint on location, weather permitting.

Alvaro’s easy manner and sense of humor disguise a wonderful tutor. He has great expertise and experience in several mediums, but is most widely recognized as an international leading watercolorist. Alvaro has won numerous major international awards, including three from AWS. He has written regularly for art magazines around the world. He is the author of "Watercolor Painting with Passion", and had recently released a DVD titled "Inspired Watercolor".

SYLLABUS for the three day workshop

Introduction to Watercolors. The philosophical side of “what makes a painting”. Simple one go demonstration of a watercolor. Simple aspects of the medium will be discussed: wet on wet, wet on dry, lost & found edges, and color blending. Topic will be to discuss and understand values and values ranges within a painting. A demo of a more complex painting will be performed. Maximum guidance to the students will be given.

A painting of a Street scene, with European buildings, will give us the perfect
Subject to look at: color mixing, perspective, texture, figures, mood, etc.

A full size painting of a Street scene with a very subdued light (early morning or late afternoon). Excellent exercise and very challenging one, where values play a very important role, along with bBroad washes to practice color mixing and wet on wet techniques.

IN GENERAL: Every day we will be conducting critique of the painting in progress. I walk among the students’ work, giving them friendly advice on how I think they could improve their work, to help them make the most of every painting opportunity.

On the last day, will be the final critique session, where every student will show the best painting they have produced, and will go home not only feeling great, with their achievement, but realizing how much they have learned after having so much fun, and with a clear understanding of the strength and weakness of their paintings.
