Terry Isaac     July 4-10, 2010 (Five Teaching Days)
Painting the Drama of Wildlife

Terry IsaacTerry draws his inspiration from observing nature, always on the look-out for “magical moments”. He paints anything from humming birds to whales, either close up or in their natural habitat. Terry likes to capture particularity, avoid stylizing, and expose the uniqueness that everything in nature possesses. Typically he works from background to foreground – general to specific, striving to create something that is captivating. You are encouraged to bring whatever type of medium you are comfortable with as Terry’s ideas and techniques can be used in any medium. He will be demonstrating with Liquitex acrylic paints and works from color prints and sketchbooks. He encourages students to bring reference material which includes subject and habitat setting.

He asks students to bring examples of their work (originals, slides, prints) for a critique session. Students can bring a piece they are currently working on or start a new piece in the workshop.

Terry received a formal art education; he believes his best training has come from fieldwork and from studying the work of favorite wildlife artists. Terry taught art at the secondary level in public school for 8 years before turning to painting full-time. Terry has now been a professional artist for nearly 25 years.

Additional creative endeavors include commissions to paint the 1991 New York duck stamp and to create fourteen waterfowl drawing for the Audubon Bird handbooks. He was commissioned by Walt Disney to paint the main character for a children’s movie. His paintings are included in: Painting Birds Step-by-Step, The Best of Wildlife Art, and his own book Painting the Drama of Wildlife Step-by-Step (North Light Books).
