The Color of Plein Air Landscapes - Oil and Acrylics

Ron Sanders Landscape Plein air painting demands a direct statement of color produced by light. Learn how to quickly mix clean, bright colors and beautiful neutrals through an understanding of principle primaries and the four properties of color: hue, temperature, value and chroma. Develop sensitivity to temperature based color common to outdoor painting and how to mix using analogous vs. complimentary colors. Through lecture, demos, studio exercises, and field painting you will learn to build better landscapes by “seeing, simplifying, and subordinating.” In combination with compositional tools, you will plan paintings for bolder form, increased spacial depth, and a stronger statement of focal point that will take your paintings from ho-hum to wow!

Ron received his BFA in illustration at the Columbus College of Art & Design in Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated with honors. He has been represented by agents in New York and Chicago and has produced illustrations in a variety of media for advertising and promotional material, books, calendars and newspapers. His clients have included Spike TV, Doubleday Bookclub, Harcourt, McGraw Hill, The Boy Scouts, regional newspapers and others. Ron also has experience in digital prepress for the printing industry where he broadened his understanding of color. With a strong foundation in representational art and an introduction to the painting methods of the old masters at CCAD, Ron pursued the traditions of academic oil painting after college, which led to the exhibition of his work in more than a dozen galleries nationwide. Later, Ron studied impressionism and alla prima painting with George Strickland, president of the PAPA, and with Chinese artist, Huihan Liu. Ron continues to explore the balance between the formalities of academic work and the expressive and romantic qualities of impressionist influences through the medium of oil paint. His 30+ years experience as a commissioned fine artist and gallery painter have led to the exhibition of his work in prestigious national juried shows as well as public, private, corporate, and museum collections.
