Hot Wax/Cool Art™: Exploring Encaustic Painting
Returning for the 2nd year in 2010
www.margaretberryart.com
Experience the magic of an ancient art form! Margaret is an enthusiastic experienced teacher of the encaustic process for both beginning and skills artists. This medium was used over 2500 years ago by the Greeks to adorn their ships, by the Romans to colorize marble sculpture and by the Egyptians to paint the famous Fayum mummy portraits. Today it is being rediscovered by contemporary artists. If you have been looking for the translucent qualities of watercolor, the surface character of oils, the fast drying advantages of acrylics and the exciting feel of ceramic surfaces, you will fall in love with this versatile medium. All painting styles welcome.
Encaustic is composed of beeswax, tree resin, and pigment, applied hot and fused to create a beautiful, translucent an striking surface. With Margaret’s guidance, you will explore brushing, scraping, layering and pouring wax on a variety of supports. Try wood, Plexiglas and paper. Sensuous textures, lustrous depth and the smell and feel of beeswax are only the start. This introduction to encaustic will have you wanting more as you discover its unlimited creative possibilities. See how to combine encaustic with other mediums such as drawing, photography, printmaking and collage. Plus, you will make transfers into the wax, incise the wax and build up deep textures with stencils. Oil pigment sticks are compatible with encaustic and you will use them to further enhance you paintings. Demos will be interspersed with ample time to turn out several finished works.
Margaret serves as an artist-in-residence for the Nebraska Arts Council and teaches Hot Wax/Cool Arttm workshops throughout the U.S. She paints in encaustic and also incorporates photography and collage in her work. She is a charter member of International Encaustic Artists and serves as Exhibitions co-chair on its Board of Directors. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the U.S. and she recently received the Juror’s Prize in the Working in Wax national competition and a 1st place prize in the American Art Awards.
