Linda Brubaker     June 20-25, 2010 (Four Teaching Days)
Theorem Painting on Velvet

Linda BrubakerTheorem is a traditional painting technique in which oil paint is applied through a set of stencils to a velvet background. Subjects are typically still life arrangements of fruits or flowers. Original works are displayed in prominent museums and private collections and this decorative art has been regaining recognition and interest. Beginning students will learn the concepts involved in producing a series of stencils from line drawings and the techniques in the use of color and shading, and free hand painting. Students will learn realism in color, shading and detail. Learning these techniques along with an historical perspective will provide a good background for further study.

Linda challenges her students’ creativity and encourages their growth in a relaxed and affirming atmosphere wherein each student can choose their own subject matter from her sizeable library of historic and contemporary patterns ranging from basic to complex in difficulty. During the first day of the workshop, all students will trace, cut and paint the same design. They should then expect to complete two to four compositions of their choosing during the balance of the week.

Linda has over thirty years’ experience in Theorem Painting. Her teaching experience includes classes for Landis Valley Museum, Lancaster, PA: the Hershey Museum, Hershey, PA; the Susquehanna Folk Music Society, Harrisburg, and workshops for various chapters of the Historic Society of Early American Decorators, Inc. She is an instructor for Fletcher Farms School of Arts and Crafts, Ludlow, VT.

Linda’s work has been found in museum shops on the East Coast and gift shops across the country. She has demonstrated at working shows such as The Folk Fest at Mercer Museum, Waterford Historic Homes Tour and Craft Exhibit, George Washington’s home Mount Vernon and at the Kutztown Pennsylvania German Festival.

She has frequently been chosen as one of the "200 Best Craftsmen" by “Early American Life Magazine.” She has earned numerous “A” awards in Theorem, Country Painted Tin and Bronze Powder Stenciling from the Historic Society of Early American Decorators, Inc. She was selected to create an ornament for the White House Christmas tree in 1999 and 2001 and was a featured artist on the HGTV show “Decorating the White House 2001.” In addition, she authored the book “Theorem Painting – Tips, Tools and Techniques” published in 2009. She is currently serving as a juror for “Early American Life” magazine.
