Digital Photography - Adobe Photoshop

James Stiles This course is designed to provide self-directed instruction and knowledge of opportunities in digital photography. You will learn the Adobe Photoshop editing software to create digital portfolio projects and presentations. This will include retouching photos, manipulating color and contrast, resizing photos for various applications, special effects, Photoshop adjustment layers, using “Bridge” to edit photos, and using type over photos.  Learn to create images in various formats including photo montages, business cards, picture packages, brochures, self promotional cards, advertisements, and web sites, while understanding how to use a variety of printable surface media types. Students will view the work of various professional photographers throughout history, making connections to their own use of the camera. Both a professional printed and digital portfolio will be printed using a digital color printer.

Students will learn how to take well composed photographs using their own 35mm digital cameras. Emphasis will be placed on basic camera handling skills, understanding of their camera’s operations manual, compositional guidelines, and proper utilization of natural light and electronic flash, film speeds, shutter, aperture, and lens capabilities.

Course Topics:

  1. A history of photography and current masters of the field 
  2. Adjusting and manipulating images in Photoshop CS3 & CS4
  3. Printing images on a digital printer.
  4. Employment literacy and preparation
  5.  A Photography Vocabulary
  6. Create an on-line portfolio of personal or commercial work.
  7. Join an on-line photography community to receive feedback on photographs as well as post questions to the community.
  8. Produce professional quality images both in color and black and white.
  9. Participate in class evaluations of photographic images.
  10. Produce a series of editorial images for use as a layout in a magazine or advertisements.
  11. Produce a series of digital special effects for photographic images.
  12. Create images in various formats including business cards, picture packages, brochures, self promotional cards, advertisements, and web sites, while understanding how to use a variety of printable surface media types.
  13. Produce a working portfolio that including printed images, contact sheets, and a CD/DVD containing all the printed work in a digital format.
  14. Create digital images and promo cards that can be sent by e-mail.

 

Biography

James Stiles has been a working photographer for over 20 years specializing in fashion, portraits, still-lifes, and his exhibition works. He is a recent transplant to Los Angeles from his home town in N.Y.C.

His work has been published and exhibited internationally and nationally with such notable photographers as Robert Mapplethorpe, And Helmut Newton, as well as a few one-person shows including The MBM Gallery, SoHo, NYC.

He received his B.F.A. degree from The School of Visual Arts and is currently teaching photography at Otis College of Art & Design. He has also worked as a professional printer at some of the best photographic labs in NYC, including Duggal Color and Color Edge Labs.

PAL’s (Participants at large) can vacation at Dillman’s for $300, includes accommodations. Costs for breakfasts, dinners and receptions are additional.
