Cecile Baird CPSA     June 6-12, 2010 (Five Teaching Days)
Capture Light in Colored Pencil

Cecile BairdLearn to use dramatic lighting, strong values and bold color to turn the most ordinary of subjects into works of art. Learn how to create luminous works that make people say - “I can’t believe that is colored pencil!”

Concentrating on still life, Cecile will guide the students through the entire process from set up to finished art. Since so many people seem to be intimidated by lighting Cecile will demonstrate how easy it really is to add drama to any still life. The beginning of the workshop will deal with set up, composition and lighting. Even though reference material for the projects will be supplied by Cecile, students are encouraged to bring their digital cameras to capture these class still life set up demonstrations for their own use.

The rest of the class will be devoted to color and technique. Through demonstrations and class projects students will learn how to analyze a reference and determine which colors to use. They will learn to use complementary colors, layering and burnishing to create the rich smooth look of oils with colored pencil. Cecile’s secrets to creating deep rich darks and brilliant luminous color will be shared. Students will come away with a better understanding of how to use the unique properties of colored pencil to bring their work to a new level. Methods such as how to do under paintings with water soluble ink pencils will be employed to make the process faster. Cecile will guide the students step by step through each process. Her easy going manner and positive critiquing methods make class fun and relaxing.

Cecile will provide project references and UArt Sandpaper samples for the class. All other supplies can be purchased online at dickblick.com.
