Carol Spohn     May 24-28, 2010 (Three Teaching Days)
Watercolor, Let the Water do the Work

Carol SpohnCarol’s workshop is a perfect opportunity for the beginner painter as well as the experienced painter to learn techniques enabling them to complete successful watercolor paintings. Carol shares her step-by-step approach to painting with students of all levels. All projects include written instructions, a line drawing and a color photo. Drawing ability is not necessary, allowing the student to focus on the mechanics of painting. Carol paints watercolor with an emphasis on wet into wet watercolor techniques. Each day of class will include a separate project with the expectation of going home with completed paintings. One day of class will focus on painting a watercolor batik incorporating watercolor, rice paper and wax to create an exciting alternative to traditional watercolor.

Carol’s painting career started in 1989 when she learned to paint with acrylics during her lunch hour. This love of painting has expanded to an exciting and completely new world of teaching watercolor locally and nationally. A popular watercolor teacher at decorative painting conventions, Carol has shared her joy of painting watercolors to over 500 students throughout the country. Initially trained as a decorative artist, Carol has also studied with nationally known fine artists including Karlyn Holman, Tom Jones, Jean Grasdorf, Chen Khee Chee, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Karen Knutson and Richard Graves. Carol has published articles in the Decorative Painter Cave Painting II, "Battle" Issue 1, 2008, Christmas Collage, Issue 6 November/December 2007, Welcome Home, Issue 5 Sept/October 2006, Winter Evergreen, Issue 6, Nov/Dec 2006. Carol is a member of the Northstar Watercolor Society, Minnesota Watercolor Society, Society of Decorative Artists, Twin Cities Decorative Painting Guild and Northland Decorative Painters including serving as president. Her paintings are sold at local exhibits and art fairs.

A lifetime resident of Minnesota, Carol lives in a 100+ year old house in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband Coz and their two cats, Corky and Rascal. When she is not painting, Carol enjoys working in her gardens and stamping/card making.
