Carol Buonato     July 18-24, 2010 (Five Teaching Days)
Painted Clock Dials

Carol Buonat Painted Clock Dials Clocks in one form or another have been with us for many centuries. Now you can learn how to lay out a time track, paint decorative corners, use gesso and gold leaf, and end up with your own timepiece. (They make great gifts!) Patterns will be available, but if you prefer your own subject matter, just bring photos with you. We will be using oil paints on masonite dials, which will have been prepared for you. The time track (Roman Numerals) will be done in ink with a technical pen, compass, and lettering aid. Decorative subjects include ships, birds, flowers, geometrics, and fruit, as well as gessoed decorations covered in golf leaf. Quartz movements will be available for purchase, as will some supplies.

Carol Buonato has been a professional dial painter and restorer of antique clock dials for the past 20 years. Using the original techniques of painting tall case clock dials (i.e. oil paints, gesso, gold leaf) she duplicates the dial patterns of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. She received a Specialist Award in Painted Clock Dials from the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD) and studied painting techniques with their teachers. She is also a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) and has had an article published in both of these organizations' publications. HSEAD has also produced a professionally made DVD called "Painted Clock Dials" in which Carol gives detailed instructions on how to prepare a dial for painting, execute a time track, paint the decorative art work, gesso and gold leaf details, and apply a protective finish.

Carol offers a partial tuition scholarship.
