Suzanne McDermott     May 31 – June 6, 2009 (Five Teaching Days)
Basic Drawing and Watercolor

In this workshop, Suzanne will thoroughly cover drawing and watercolor fundamentals that are often neglected. Through a series of progressive exercises interspersed with mini-lectures and demonstrations, we explore tools and mediums, visual concepts, color mixing and technique. The initial drawing instruction acquaints you with your innate style and serves as natural footing for understanding basic issues in watercolor. While exploring the natural world around us, we develop our conceptual understanding of form and color and our physical ability to represent what we see on paper. Materials are kept to essentials and work is done on a small, portable scale.

Musician, writer, painter and teacher, Suzanne McDermott currently works in the studio she built in Nashville.

Between 1993 and 2002, Suzanne recorded five critically acclaimed albums of songs and toured extensively throughout the US and Europe. In the course of her longer performance career, she has shared the stage with the likes of Gore Vidal, Dory Previn, Bert Jansch, Roger McGuinn, Bill Morrissey, John Gorka, Cheryl Wheeler, Livingston Taylor, Tom Paxton, Laurie Lewis, Dar Williams, and Martin Sexton, performing in such venues as Passim, Siné, CB's Gallery, Godfrey Daniels, The Point, Eddie's Attic, The Bluebird, McCabe's and The Freight & Salvage. Suzanne was a finalist in the prestigious troubadour competition at the 25th Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

In 1997, Suzanne developed her intensive and inspiring Basic Drawing and Watercolor Workshop for the Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina. She has since taught that workshop throughout New England, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Suzanne studied fine art, design and art history at The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Santa Monica College, and earned a BA in Humanities (Drama, Art and Music) from New College, Sarasota, FL. Working primarily on commission, her artwork has been featured in solo and group shows in Los Angeles, Sarasota, FL, Charleston, SC, Petersburg and Culpeper, VA, and is in private collections in the US and Europe.
