Melissa Miller Nece CPSA    May 25 – 31, 2008 (Five Teaching Days)
Two Workshops in One: Colored Pencil Dry & Wet

This class is really two workshops in one! Master the use of traditional colored pencils, then discover the additional possibilities of water-soluble pencils.

Two mediums in one — the best of both worlds! — the precision and control of pencil drawing and the fluid possibilities of paint. Whether you are new to colored pencils or experienced with them, you will discover techniques that produce beautiful results. With the tools included in your kit, you will first learn how to smooth and blend dry colored pencils and to create convincing textures rapidly—without heavy pressure and repetitive strokes. Through the second day, you will have plenty of time to apply these techniques on your own projects. The third day, we will switch to watercolor pencils, using products provided by Derwent, the leading innovators in watersoluble pencils. You will practice wet techniques which may be used alone or in combination with the dry pencils. Classroom sets will include Derwent Inktense pencils, the most remarkable watersoluble pencils available, classic Watercolor pencils, Aquatone woodless pencils, and the unique Graphitints. The last two days will allow time to finish or develop new projects or to move outdoors for plein air drawing.

As you work, you will also learn what details to look for, which ones to bring out or minimize, and what shortcuts will help you finish more quickly and effectively. There will be personal and group critiques and mini-demonstrations as needed (skin tones, foliage, water, clouds, rocks, backgrounds, etc.). Discussion will include the characteristics of different pencil brands, color selection and mixing tips. Additional topics may also include working in miniature, framing, entering shows, pricing your work and other aspects of making and presenting art. Melissa will also be available after dinner each night for additional guidance. Supplies provided include two kinds of erasers, blender pencils and surprise tools, sample papers, outline and color reference images for exercises and practice projects. The first 18 students to register will also receive a free set of 6 Inktense pencils.
