New to Dillman’s
Marilynn is a Professor Emeritus from Ball State University where she has
taught watercolor and encaustic for 20 years. She loves to teach and seeks
a balance between a relaxed studio environment and a serious method of instruction.
Marilynn is returning to watercolor after being attracted to the ancient mediums
of egg tempera and encaustic for that last 10 years. Summer 2006 grants supported
her creative research and travels as context for the development of NEW images
with NEW techniques, an outgrowth of her investigations of tempera painting.
The history of the painting process became a significant issue as images and
ideas revealed themselves in layers of colors and shapes. Paint was poured,
sometimes through porous papers that dried with the imprint of the various
papers’ textures. Images were drawn and re-drawn with numerous intermittent
pouring of pigment. She re-discovered the beauty of watercolor paintings. Marilynn
developed a body or work under the auspices of a 2006 Ball State University
Faculty Summer Creative Arts Grant and a 2005 Indiana Arts Commission Grant.
She also was awarded a May 2006 Vermont Studio Residency Grant. This permitted
her to travel to Vermont, then throughout Michigan, and finally to Italy, Wales,
and to Chicago museums and galleries. Everywhere she went, she painted. At
the end of the summer, Marilynn had a portfolio of NEW watercolors. Most were
standard size, but even scale was investigated and pushed to NEW limits. In
Vermont, she painted three wall-sized paintings, approximately 5 feet by 6
feet.
Differences Make a Difference -
To create potent images, Marilynn adheres to the use of differences—differences
in the elements of design, differences in technique, and the juxtaposition
of different images to create visual tension. Such differences are evident
in her watermedia paintings where she combines transparent and opaque watercolor
with watercolor pencils and crayons. Other paintings offer a shift in time
and place. Marilynn’s reoccurring life cycle theme remains evident in
her NEW watercolors.
The Dillman’s workshop Marilynn will be teaching is designed for all
levels of experience, from beginners to experienced artists. Genuine interest
in watercolor exploration is the primary requirement. Come and experience the
