Ute Klein Bernhardt     May 18 – 24, 2008 (Five Teaching Days)
Gem Engraving: Bas-Relief, Intaglio and Sculpture

The purpose of this workshop will be to introduce the beginner, as well as the person trained in the arts, to gem carving. This relatively unknown branch of the glyptic arts will be taught using both gemstone and glass. The course will also include an introduction to the history of the art of gem carving based on Ute’s lecture of ‘The art of gem engraving 6000 BCE to the present’. Various types of gemstones, along with their structure and hardness will be examined. Students will make a bas-relief model of their chosen design using plasticine. The emphasis will be on gaining an understanding of the tri-dimensional form that the student will later carve. Shading and scaling the design to size are some of the skills that will be developed. This class is limited to 5 students.

Ute is an internationally known gem engraver, who received her degree from the School of Gem Engravers in Idar-Oberstin, Germany. As a miniature realist, her contemporary designs incorporate the shape, color, size and quality of the gemstone. She is a recipient of many awards, including the American Craftsman Cup, she has been inducted into the National Rockhound and Lapidary Hall of Fame, and completed a cameo of John Paul II on site at the Vatican. Her work is represented in private and museum collections around the world. She has been published in the Professional Jeweler Magazine on the subject of gem and pearl carving as well as in Gems & Jewellery of the Gemological Association of Great Britain and the Valuer of the National Council of Jewellery Valuers of Australia where she developed a technique for intaglio carving on diamond. To quote the artist: “Each piece is like an etude for me where I seek expression, movement and balance within a small area.”
