Returning for the 2nd year
Abstraction and realism – what’s the connection? John believes
that every successful realistic painting must also be a well thought-out and
carefully planned abstraction. By improving our abilities to paint abstractly,
we improve our realistic paintings as well. During John’s workshop students
will be working with abstraction and realism. John’s class is geared
towards artists of all levels. The workshop begins with abstraction, encouraging
representational painters to experiment with a different style and challenging
experienced abstract painters to explore new possibilities in expressing their
creative voices. During class the students will produce an abstract painting
beginning with a step-by-step process designed to make the experience both
productive and enjoyable. With the completion of the abstract painting, we’ll
apply the same design principles to the production of a realistic painting.
John will provide demonstrations, critiques and individual help throughout
the workshop. Participants are encouraged to expand upon their current levels
of understanding and become more comfortable applying the principles and elements
of design to their work.
Never tried an abstraction? Work in abstraction
but ready for some new ideas? John has developed a non-threatening approach
that will enable you to immediately immerse yourself in the process of creating
an abstract painting. He will show you how collage and acrylics can be used
to enhance and strengthen an abstract piece and will demonstrate the use of
a mouth atomizer to create texture and pull a painting together. The abstract
process is all about design, which will be the main focus of the workshop.
Using your new understanding of design you will go on to create a second strong
painting, this time in your own chosen style. John will provide frequent demonstrations
and critiques and there will be lots of individual help.
