The Secret Weapons of Colored Pencil
New to Dillman’s
Arm yourself with the secret weapons of colored pencil! As a fine art medium,
colored pencil is versatile, inexpensive, and easy to master. Whether you are
new to colored pencils or experienced with them, you will discover techniques
that produce beautiful results. Working with unusual erasers and ordinary household
items, you will learn how to smooth and blend color and to create convincing
textures rapidly—without heavy pressure and repetitive strokes. Exercises
will familiarize you with handling these tools for specific effects, and you
will put them to use on a variety of subjects. Then you may apply these techniques
on your own choice of projects. As you work, you’ll learn what details
to look for, which ones should be brought out or minimized, and what shortcuts
will help you finish more quickly and effectively. Discussion will also include
the characteristics of various pencil brands, color choices and mixing tips.
Supplies provided include two kinds of erasers and some surprise tools, sample
papers, color and outline reference images for the exercises and practice projects.
On the first morning, we will do a series of exercises to familiarize everyone
with the tools and techniques. In the afternoon, participants will work on
their choice of project (references and outlines included in each kit). Mini-demonstrations
as needed, on class suggested topics (skin tones, foliage, water, clouds, rocks,
backgrounds, miniature art, etc.). The following days will depend on class
preferences. Participants will most likely work on their own independent projects
with individual attention and frequent group demonstrations, but class members
could also move outdoors part of the time for plein air experience. Instructor
will be available in the studio outside of class time for additional interaction.
Melissa is a Signature Member of and Ways and Means Director for the Colored

Portrait Inspirations, and The Best of Portrait Painting. She
is a frequent prizewinner at regional and national shows. A workshop presenter
