Louise Lundin    September 23 – 29, 2007 (Five Teaching Days)
Painting People in Watercolor: Heads, Features and Faces

Louise’s artistic philosophy is that “less” is “more.” When painting portraits, her aim is to capture the essence of each subject, and simultaneously achieve a fresh, sparkling watercolor. Her portraits exemplify the spontaneity of watercolor, reflect the qualities of light, beautiful precipitations and transitions in watercolor washes, and good color-chords. Most paintings start with linear drawings, and value and color sketches, which enable elimination of futile facts. As she demos her approach, she explains what she “wishes had been explained” to her during her years of watercolor study and painting. As well as, a further understanding of head architecture. She’ll explain how to see, illustrate how to draw, design and paint heads, faces, features (with expression), and develop compositions. If she sees a student in doubt, she encourages him/her to “go for it,” preserving the student’s morale (the most important thing).

Louise Lundin is an artist, instructor, and writer, who considers herself a perennial student. She began studying design and watercolor more than twenty-five years ago under the guidance of renowned artist Edgar A. Whitney. She continued her studies under Cheng-Khee Chee for a composite year, Frank Webb, Don Andrews, Skip Lawrence, Christopher Schink, the late Robert E. Wood, and others. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree with highest honors in English with an emphasis of writing. She has continued advanced study of art and design.

Louise has created illustrations for publications, designed posters and tee shirts, and worked as courtroom artist for television/news media. A watercolor portait titled Rashmi is featured in a book titled People in Watercolor by Rockport Publishers. A Lundin watercolor portrait titled WWII Soldier is featured on the cover of War Stories, a book authored by Al Zdon. Lundin's watercolor painting titled Nightingale is one among eight artists' paintings printed on note cards for Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra's 2004-05 fundraiser. She has receive many commissions including creating/painting a montage for the University of Minnesota Marching Band, from which award posters for marching band students have been published. Her Sauna Paintings embellish the walls of many sauna dressing rooms throughout the United States and several have found their way to Finland.

Past students have said of Louise’s workshops: “Excellent class! Very clear instruction”...”I enjoyed this class so much. If I can retain some of the wonderful things you taught us, I’ll be very happy!”...”I learned a lot from your demos of wet-into-wet and your portraits, wow!”...”Your lessons were excellent. I hope you’ll come back again”...”Inspiring to see your willingness to risk and learn and fix. This was a great lesson in itself”...”Your workshop has been a great experience. You are a very good instructor”...”Your ability to involve the class in the discussion was very helpful”...”Demonstrations were wonderful and inspiring”...”Besides being a good teacher, I love your attitude of ‘we can fix it’ and ‘it’s only paper’ and your great sense of humor. I learned a lot!”
